The photographer/artist:

David Romeo was born and raised in Tampa, Florida. His summers, while growing up, were spent in his mother’s hometown of Provincetown, Massachusetts where he would watch artists creating their works of art.  He was fascinated by the creative use of junk to create metal moving structures. He would watch the canvas artist line the beach one after the other, each creating their own special style of what they saw.

Later in his youth he would start using photography equipment his father had from an early hobby. His first camera was a 4x5 Graflex. He also made 8mm movies with his best friend. He went to the University of South Florida in 1963 to be an Architect. He became involved in the student union and ran the campus darkroom and photography club. This got him in contact with a local TV station where he got his first job in the photography department.  It was there he learned the fundamentals of B&W photography.

In the mid 70’s he would run his own photography studio and it was there that he first conceived of the Photosculpture technique.  Though he knew his darkroom techniques well, he could not quite get the look he wanted. Over the years he would dabble with different media and try different ideas.

His career changed to computer programming and for the next 20 years. With the advent of high quality digital photography and the computer assisted manipulation of the photographs, he found the power over the image that he had sought for many years. With this new tool and years of experience he began once again to create his Photosculptures.
